What should you do today?

In order to celebrate the Down Syndrome Awareness Day properly, you should imitate some of the best behaviors of people with Down Syndrome, such as:

  • Let your smile shine in your face for as long as possible.

  • Give a big hug to the people you love which are close to you.

  • Let your heart explode of happiness for being who you are and having what you have.

  • Don’t take yourself serious at all. Wear colorful clothes, mismatches socks, a funny hat…

  • Find the beauty on small things around you.

  • Live the present, don’t think about what will happen in the next 10min. Be present now and enjoy.

  • Sing if you feel like, dance if you feel like, cook if you feel like, make things you know you will make you happy.

  • Be supportive and positive.

More about this date

The 21st of March (21/03) is the international day to celebrate and support people with Down Syndrome. The numbers on this date are very symbolic and remind us well what is Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) all about.

We all have 46 chromosomes, which comes in pairs (like socks!) Basically, we have 23 pairs of chromosomes: 23 x 2 = 46

What happens with people with Down Syndrome is that they got one extra chromosome in the position 21.  They got a trio (3), instead of a pair (2) of chromosomes in the position 21. Making the genetic disorder to be called Trisomy 21 and making the international Down Syndrome Awareness Day the 21st of March (21/03).

Do we call Down Syndrome because they are somehow “down”?

Not at all! This is a common mistake most people make. This popular name is due to the name of the English physician John Langdon Down, the first person to make an accurate description of a person with Down Syndrome.

The scientific name is actually Trisomy 21.

Now that you know more about Down syndrome, share this post with your friends!
